This is a sandy beach next to the Mala Pier dive site in the Lahania-area. It's called Baby Beach because it's protected from waves by a shallow reef, making it safe for kids to swim. The last few days we were on Maui, the entire coastline was stirred-up by waves on all sides of the island and this was one of the very few places we could snorkel. The water is only 2-3' deep near the beach. As you swim out, your path is blocked by a very shallow expanse of coral that is too shallow to swim over. Basically we swam around over the sand near the edge of the coral. There were lots of turtles everywhere. In Hawaii, the turtles are completely indifferent to divers/snorkelers and if you're not paying attention, they will bump into you from behind because you were in their way and they couldn't be bothered to swim around you. There were also several kinds of fish, including lots of reef triggerfish and the similar, but more rare lagoon triggerfish. One snorkeler we met on the beach insisted that he just saw a sealion (Hawaiian monk seal?). Basically, it was a nice, safe, relaxing snorkel spot on a laid-back local beach for days that are too rough to go anywhere else.
