Since I couldn't reach the deeper, farther-out rocky area last time I was here because of a defective compass, strong current and not-great visibility, I came back for another try on July 17, 2021. This time I had a new compass and instead of diving 1/2-hour after slack like last time, this time I went in an hour before slack. The visibility was slightly better (15-20'), but the current was just as strong and flowing West like last time.
I decided to go for it and followed my compass out across the pebble-bottomed gap towards the kelp-topped rocky area off the point. The bottom here was about 50' deep. I soon reached this rock reef.
I swam along the rock wall to the West side of the reef then South to its far side.
The far side of the reef dropped down in a wall to about 60' deep.
I swam out from the base of the wall. The bottom here was areas of flat, sold rock, boulders and rubble. Visibility had improved to 20-30'.
Eventually I came across a wall that became bigger the farther I swam along it. I ended up reaching a depth of 85'. This plumose anemone-covered wall was the most impressive part of the dive so far, but because of the current ( I had to struggle to swim against it) and the distance from shore, I wasn't able to spend much time here.
I swam back up towards the kelp-topped shallow reef.
I swam back across the 50'-deep gap to the rock wall topped by kelp at Brooks Point.
I'll probably try and visit this area again, but the current and distance from shore make it a challenging dive.
