I came back to Grouse Island on an Abyssal Dive charter. Ideally, I would have liked to dive somewhere I haven't been to before, but coming back here gave me an excuse to try and find the wolfeels that are a feature of this site. I didn't find them last time. Today, the boat captain Earl gave us a good description of where to find a den. He said to swim straight down the slope from where we entered the water (near the North end of the island). When we reached a depth of 70' or so, we were to turn left (South) and swim along the slope for a short distance and we should find the wolfeel den.
Visibility was about 20-30'. I swam down the slope and stopped just over 70' deep. The bottom down here was a gentle slope with large boulders scattered around. The hollows under these boulders seemed like ideal wolfeel dens so I spent some time looking around under all of them with my light. I didn't see any wolfeels here and I started swimming South as directed. The big boulders soon ended. I had become so fixated on the idea that the wolfeel den must be under one of the boulders, that I assumed I had swam too far so I turned around to look around the boulders again. Later I learned that some of the other divers kept swimming just a bit farther and found the den at the bottom of a small ledge (so not under one of the boulders after all).
After giving up on finding wolfeels, I saw an octopus out in the open about 50' deep as I was heading back up the slope.
