This is one of the public rights-of-way from Reef Road to the water on the Cottam Point peninsula in Nanoose. I've never really been interested in this coastline since the marine chart doesn't show a steep drop and it seems mostly less than 50' deep, so no sponges or feather stars. I decided I might as well have a look anyway since you never know; I've been surprised before by sites that I didn't expect much from. I dove here on Dec. 27, 2025. Ludgate Road was very short, almost like a driveway for the house at the end of it. At the end of this short road, there was a trail leading to the water. This trail wasn't that long, but was a bit steep in places. A stream ran across it at the beginning. There were some steps made from rocks and logs with a rope handrail tied to the trees. Basically I don't think this trail would be an issue for most people. Out from the shore there was a small exposed rock reef. My plan was to dive the outside of this reef and swim North-West.
I swam out on the surface to the exposed rock. The shallow bottom along the way was mostly covered with oysters.
I swam down the rock reef. It ended about 30' deep. Visibility was only around 10-15' in the shallows and maybe 30' below 40' deep. I swam out deeper over the sand/gravel slope. There were some more small rocky reefs scattered around. I started swimming North-West. The gentle slope was mostly sand/gravel with a few low rocky reefs. There didn't seem to be any rocky areas below 50' deep. Below that there was just a plain of silty sand. I tried swimming farther out a few times to see if I could see any more rocky areas, but there was just the sand. My maximum depth was about 60'. There was also not much marine life. For fish, there were a couple of kelp greenlings, a painted greenling and some gobies. The water seemed unusually cold, with blurry fresh water mixed in. I checked my dive computer throughout the dive and it showed a consistent temperature of 4.5 -5 degrees. This seems unusually low to me
I headed up the slope and swam back in the 20-30' depths.
I wasn't impressed at all with this site. Compared to other nearby sites like Cottam Point or Madrona Point, I can see why this spot never became a known dive site. I don't think I'll be back.
