Just over a month ago (near the end of June), I dove here to see the small patch of bull kelp that had been reported just off one of the small beaches. At the time, it had been an unusually cold Spring and the water temperature was still only 14 degrees, which is just within the limit for bull kelp to survive. Since then, the weather and water had heated up and I wanted to dive here again to see if the fatal temperatures had killed off the bull kelp. I dove here on Aug. 2, 2022. According to my dive computer, the water in the shallows was 20 degrees, which is well over the fatal limit for bull kelp. Visibility was pretty decent for the Summer shallows (probably 15-20'). As expected, the bull kelp was dead. There were 2 holdfasts left on the bottom, each with a disintegrating stipe stretching out from it.
With my curiosity satisfied, I spent the rest of the dive swimming down along the wall. Visibility steadily improved. At my maximum depth of 112' deep, visibility was over 50'.
