This is a well-known dive site across Discovery Pass from Campbell River on Quadra Island. I came here on March 9, 2025 on an Abyssal Dive Charter trip. We dove it on slack and I didn't feel much current. Visibility was probably around 50'.
We descended down the rubble/boulder slope. As with many Campbell River dive sites, the shallows at first seemed pretty bare with regards to marine life. As we went deeper, all the classic Discovery Pass species (strawberry anemones, various yellow sponges, giant barnacles, etc.)were piled all over the place. The topography was made up of sloping rock piled with large boulders and some small walls. My maximum depth was about 85', but the bottom continued to slope down deeper than that.
Puget Sound king crabs are one of the signature species that I expect to see in Discovery Pass. So far on this dive I didn't notice any, which I thought was strange. Suddenly, I came across all of them together. It was a seasonal mating aggregation of about 10 of them.
Because of the extra-dense covering of Discovery Pass invertebrate life, I think this is now one of my favorite Campbell River dives (along with Steep Island and Richmond Reef).
