This was the first dive that I did in Cozumel. It was a windy day with big waves that made it difficult to board the boat at the jetty. As the dive boat reached the marine park, they got a call on the radio that the port was closed. In Cozumel, when it is windy, the harbour master assesses the conditions and makes the call to "close the port", which means no boats are allowed to leave and any boats already out have to immediately stop what they're doing and return to the closest harbour. Of course, if there are divers in the water, the boat can stay out until they are back on board. So the dive boat decided to be sneaky and quickly drop us in the water so we could at least get one dive in. I don't remember them saying what site it was, but judging by our location and descriptions of the sites online, I'm guessing it was "Tormentos" or possibly "Yucab". It was basically a long, narrow reef, maybe 10-20' high that we drifted along. If I remember right, it was about 50-60' deep. Since this was the first dive for me in Cozumel and I didn't know what to expect with the current, I only took one camera down with me. I left my macro setup in the boat so I didn't get any pictures of all the endemic toadfish that the dive master pointed out. This was the only dive where I saw any.
After the dive (which was great), the boat went to the nearest sheltered marina (as required by law during a port closure). Since we were far away from our hotels or where the boat picked us up and we had no phones or wallets on us, we had to hike up to the highway (I made a couple of trips with my gear and cameras) and wait for taxis to pass by. I guess that's what sometimes happens when you play the Cozumel dive lottery.
