This site is at the Northern tip of Curacao. It's named after the Dutch for "water mill" (English is basically Dutch spelt a bit different), because of a blow hole on land in the area. Watamula is supposed to be one of the "must do" dives in Curacao. I booked a dive charter through Go West Diving in Westpunt based on their schedule listing this dive on that day. This was a second dive after Playa Hulu, which seemed pretty much like all the shore dives in the area.
We dropped down to a plateau about 30' deep. I would have liked to swim out a bit farther and drop down over the dropoff to see what it was like deeper, but I had been scolded after the previous dive for descending before the rest of the tour group, so I was chastened and didn't want to cause a panic. I obediently stayed with the group and swam along this plateau above the slope about 35' deep. The bottom was a field of hard and soft coral. Many of the sites on Curacao (like much of the Caribbean) have mostly dead hard coral, covered with algae. Here, there was still lots of dead coral, but there was much more live coral as well. There weren't many colourful sponges since we were shallow and sponges here usually live deeper down. Since this site is up at the tip of the island, I expected to feel some current, but I actually didn't. Despite not being able to explore deeper, this was probably my favorite site during this visit to Curacao. If you do any boat dives in Curacao, this is the spot to pay for.
